Black Box Reflection

This watercolour image is distinct in the way that empty space is used in contrast to the complex forms that surround it. Alongside this is the subsequent contrast between light and dark and how shadow is successfully integrated into the overall design.

My composition of rectangular prisms employs some of these ideas in the way that the two lab spaces relate to the open meeting area. The complexity of the collisions between the rectangular prisms and the overall form of the building is a stark contrast to the smooth ground plane and the central meeting area.

Shadow is important to the relationship between the two scientists and the way that their labs represent their ideas. The orientation of the rectangles allow for light to dominate the solar research lab while giving different shades to the various areas of the evolutionary lab on different levels.

Charles Darwin:

"In the struggle for survival, the fittest win out at the expense of their rivals because they succeed in adapting themselves best to their environment."

Charles Darwin, The Origin of Species, (1859)

Nicole Kuepper:

"The amount of things we take for granted in todays society that some people don't have access to is just mind boggling when you step back and think about it."

Stephen Hawking:

"If we do discover a complete theory, it should in time be understandable in broad principle by everyone, not just a few scientists. Then we shall all, philosophers, scientists, and just ordinary people, be able to take part in the discussion of the question of why it is that we and the universe exist."

Stephen Hawking, Black Holes and Baby Universes and Other Essays, (1993)
